The Silver Fish

One of the most elusive shoes out there in the wild, the Nike Silver Fish is a collectors underrated grail that most lovers of Nike runners spend a long time finding.

Releasing in 2002, designed by Kirsten Schambra Stevens, the Nike Silver Fish was built mainly as a training shoe for short/mid distant spirits such as the 400m and 200m disciplines. At the time there wasn't a shoe that was built for training the curve of the track meaning that there was a window of opportunity shared between Kristen and Nike to make a product that caters for those sprinters.

Weighing only 155g and built similarly to a running spike, the Silver Fish has a uniquely constructed upper that was also durable enough using materials such as, ripstop and ecsaine (an ultra fine synthetic suede/polyester). The upper also features asymmetrical stitching and an additional medial stretch of material to give the athletes a more custom fit, as well as to supply more stability for the foot when taking the bend.

Most running sole units are known to supply endless amounts of comfort and cushioning so that the shoe helps with retaining your energy. For short distances this cushioning can hinder you as it can also absorb a lot of the energy you push into the ground as you stride which is used to generate the high speeds for sprinters. To avoid any loss of power or energy, the Silver Fish's sole unit is built out of a much more solid rubber with minimal cushioning. Mimicking similar outsole patterns used on the forefoot of sprint spikes, Kristen took some of the spike placements and added some circular spots to add plastic versions. They are placed around the outside of the sole so that they always run in line with the track lines when hitting the curve providing more traction.

Trying to find the Nike Silver Fish can be quite a challenge, but for any serious collector these are a must have. I wouldn't so much recommend them for long walks as they will most likely do more damage than good but 100% a pair to break some necks with at your next event!
